John Sayles: In Conversation With Rolf De Heer
60MINS
FREE FORUM
MERCURY CINEMA, 4:00PM, SUNDAY 27 FEBRUARY
(No bookings required. To ensure admission please arrive early.)
Few filmmakers can boast the type of staunchly independent career enjoyed by John Sayles that now stretches over thirty years. Sayles moved from novelist to genre screenwriter, to director and script doctor. His films have constantly troubled the conscience of America. He thrives in the margins, in telling the stories of those who have swum against the tide of American society. Along with partner Maggie Renzi, Sayles will present a selection of his work and the Australian premiere of Amigo, a film which burns with indignation at a history of an American imperialism that functions as a distant mirror of our own time.
One of the pleasures of festivals is putting people together to see what happens. Rolf de Heer (Bad Boy Bubby, The Tracker, Ten Canoes) knows something about being an independent filmmaker with a strong vision. Join us for a wide-ranging conversation between two men who have forged careers as distinctive as they have been unfashionable.
