What the Future Sounded Like is a documentary film that explores the life of South Australian based composer and innovator Tristram Cary. From his ground-breaking work in the field of electronic and electro-acoustic composition whilst serving in the Royal Navy during World War Two to his composition on film and TV scores for Ealing Studios, Hammer Horror Films and Dr Who, to his involvement with Peter Zinovieff (who founded Electronic Music Studios) building the first British synthesiser the VCS3 – which was used by many contemporary bands including Pink floyd, Roxy Music and Hawkwind and so changed the sound of contemporary music forever - and presenting the first electronic music concert in the UK, there is no doubt Cary has had a major influence on contemporary music around the globe. This timely documentary also celebrates the work Cary – now 81 - has done since emigrating to Adelaide in 1973.
