Entries open for SA's Short Screen Awards

The Media Resource Centre (MRC) is calling for entries for the 2007 SA Short Screen Awards (SASSAs) proudly driven by Toyota. Now in their eighth year, the SA Short Screen Awards reward excellence and outstanding achievement in the South Australian film community. As South Australia's premier screen awards for emerging artists the SA Short Screen Awards provide an exciting platform for filmmakers to showcase their talents. The Awards also recognise the integral role of key creative crew in the filmmaking process.

For the first time the SASSAs will be presented in partnership with the Adelaide Film Festival. The Gala Awards presentation night will be held at 7pm on Wednesday 28 February at the Wallis Academy Cinemas, Hindmarsh Square as a highlight of AFF 2007. The SASSAs are presented in the following categories:

  • Best Performance
  • Best Editing
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Video/Cinematography
  • Best Production Design
  • Innovation in Digital Media
  • Best Sound Design
  • Best Drama
  • Best Comedy
  • Best Animation
  • Best Documentary
  • Emerging Screen Producer
  • Best Performing Arts / Music
  • Video Best Direction
  • Audience Choice Award
  • Best Film Award
  • Best Composition

The above includes three new award categories introduced for 2007: Best Composition, Flinders University Emerging Screen Producer Award and an award for Innovation in Digital Media.

The major prizes in the 2007 SASSAs are: Best Film ($3,000 in SAFC professional development funding plus $1,000 cash) and Innovation in Digital Media ($3,000 in SAFC professional development funding).

Entry forms and guidelines for the SA Short Screen Awards may be downloaded from the MRC's website at www.mrc.org.au. The deadline for entries is Monday 8 January 2007.

Three 'Best-Of the Awards' public screenings will take place on Friday 16 February, Saturday 17 February and Friday 2 March at the Mercury Cinema. On Monday 26 February at the Academy Cinema the MRC and AFF will co-present Made in SA which will include the world premiere screenings of three SA shorts supported through the AFF's Investment Fund.

The Mercury Cinema and Media Resource Centre are located in the Lion Arts Centre at 13 Morphett St Adelaide. Tickets for all events at the Mercury may be purchased in advance by telephoning the MRC on 8410 0979 or purchased in person from the MRC offices.

Mercury ticket prices: 'Best Of' screenings: $11 and $9 concession per session; Made In SA ticket prices: $15, $13 (industry) and $11 concession; Gala Awards Presentation $15 or $25 including post event party.
