Andrey Zvyagintsev recasts noir through the anxieties of the present with this darkly majestic tale of suspicion, murder and institutional rot. In 2022 Russia, transport-company boss Gleb (Dmitriy Mazurov) suspects his wife Galina (Iris Lebedeva) of an affair just as the state demands workers for its war in Ukraine. As marital suspicion curdles into violence, Gleb moves through a world where corporate expediency and government coercion increasingly operate by the same chilling logic, reducing human lives to problems to be managed. Zvyagintsev’s immaculate compositions transform offices, restaurants and modernist luxury into a dehumanised labyrinth of power and corruption, finding contemporary unease in the collision of private paranoia and institutional amorality. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes and the Sydney Film Prize at Sydney Film Festival and based on the 1969 film The Unfaithful Wife by Claude Chabrol.
